"If you’re not familiar with Music From Saharan Cellphones, the basic story is this: Chris Kirkley, of Sahel Sounds, spent months travelling around Mali and Mauritania, collecting MP3s distributed through a network of mobile phones, analagous to – but totally independent of – the internet. Obviously in the West, phones are used as an access point to the global internet, but here we’re talking about them as devices for storing and playing sound files which allow sharing via bluetooth and SD card when in physical proximity to one another. Distribution through the network is dependent on the physical movements of people, making it much slower and more locally variant than the global internet, but also able to deal with a very different set of challenges.
So, Sahel Sounds has been tapping into this network, extracting music and sharing it on the global internet with which those of us in the West are more familiar. With the Music For Saharan Cellphones project, Gulls and Boomarm Nation turn that on it’s head, with producers remixing, reinterpreting and re-imagining these tunes, and then releasing them back into the Saharan wild via 30 SD cards which are being sent to Kidal, Mali, to be absorbed back into the cell phone network." - Andy Kisaragi of Generation Bass.

MICHAEL BRUCE - TRIPLE DIGITS AFTER MIDNIGHT (KUDURO/CLUB MIX FOR DISCOS)
This mix was created for Portland, Oregon's premier Tropical Bass Dance Monthly : DISCOS DISCOS at Holocene. It features some of the most successful dance floor Kuduro/Club tracks played at DISCOS in 2011 so far. It also signifies the death of Bruce's Dj alias, Dj Rumtrigger. Says Michael, "I have some material coming out shortly on the tropical bass tip, and I wanted to consolidate my projects. We had a shootout, and despite the name, my guns were just bigger!"
DISCOS DISCOS ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY!! 9-2-11
Electro Cumbia*Tropical Bass* Reggaeton* Baile* Moombahton* Sizzling international sounds! FREE BEFORE 10!
Starting with September 2010's inaugural dance party, Discos Discos has quickly become one of Portland's savviest vessels of global bass musics. Djs Zac Eno and Michael Bruce (prev. Rumtrigger) are introducing South and Central America's Cumbia, Baile Funk, Champeta, Reggaeton, Tribal-Guarachero and African styles such as Kwaito, Shangaan Electro, Soca, and Kuduro to Portland's busiest and subsequently most diverse dance floors! However, with new genres come new talents not only showcased by Michael Bruce and Eno, the monthly at Holocene has also introduced new VJ artists mainstays Trance Forever, and brought in the phenomenal electro band, Los Macuanos from Tijuana, Mexico (January). With a devout following already in tow, Discos Discos has moved to the weekend to expand its own culture as rapidly as the genre and world itself.
AUDIOCRIP : Blue Yo Speakers : son05
Armed with a mini disc and mpc, this glitch gangsta threatens candid interviews and viral YouTube videos with pent-up aggressive soundscapes. From humiliating drunk girls, getting busted for convenient store recording, and capturing the fear of victims in a street fight, this is a black and blue battle of sound deconstructing our West Coast culture. His past vendettas brought to peace through hip hop beats cut into fine-tuned spatters opening smooth organs despite a bobblin' crack-toothed cry, "You need to get the fuck out my bidness nigga!" Audiocrip wants that guy to know, "I'm in yo bidness! Its mine now!" And yours.

"DISCOS DISCOS is Holocene's newest monthly dance party, featuring sizzling tropical bass soundz! Zac Eno was a member of the Compound Records crew in SF throughout the 90s alongside DJs Stareyes, Flux & Rinse. Rumtrigger is part of the Shipwrecker Selectors crew, whose international nights at Langano Lounge have raised quite a stir. When we at Holocene laid our hands on his mix "Pop the Bottle, Fire at Will," it quickly moved into heavy rotation as a staff favorite. Cuica, aka Karen Antunes from Mississippi Records, is kicking off the night with a set of traditional cumbia and bugaloo, pulled from her vast collection of Discos Fuentes Lps. The night will also feature spectacular live visuals by E*Rock - Think lots of animated gifs of cats and bananas." -H crew
DJ RUMTRIGGER : POP THE BOTTLE, FIRE AT WILL
the first sonic lozenge released mixtape presents michael bruce´s favorite spins as rumtrigger throughout the past two years in portland, or. hear you will find obvious favorites of digital cumbia (zzk, dj sabo) and reggaeton (alexis & fido, surtek collective) mished with remixes and mashups. this eclectic mix spans three continents, four (or more) genres, and combines the influenced with their influences. hovering above : the organic chirp chirp of a drum trigger and other rapturous analog effects (pc-2 and more???). this is a dedication proper to all those involved. thank you, rumtrigger.
FREEer gets dusted…
“One sidelong cut of SUPER righteous interaction, trumpet meets percussion, steadily morphing bass, and a huge bed of synthesizer stratus reverberating inside the walls of the UFO floating above Kilimanjaro, and one side of BUGGED OUT uncanny electronic reinterpretation of the very same jam. Some real Sun God eternal rhythm here, immense and aligned with the cosmos. Massive end of the night bonfire sounds. This was one of the last records I reviewed and I am so relieved that it was as the experience it turned out to be. Silkscreened sleeve, few hundred copies. Run.” - Doug Mosurock

son 04 : gulls : FREEer 12″
from the sessions and original masters of the famed eats and opus debut, gulls‘ jesse munro johnson (evolutionary jass band, owl dudes, modernstate, die bomb shelters) unleashes another beast. a very much alive beast beating drums with four arms, shredding cymbals with eight limbs, bouncing bass with two hips, and breathing fire through two headed trumpets. delays shower down from brown skies, blending all sounds together and only mike mckinnon (wet confetti, reporter), scott blais (die bomb shelters), and sam schauer (modernstate, …worms) can add to the longevity of this now freeer beast.
side b reveals michael bruce’s retelling of this adventure, substituting 100% analog drum machines, synths, and effects to coincide with freeer’s composition. “than richer” as in a revert to what once was a popular practice of playing machines as well as programming them. this, in fact is a blend of the two…

“…things get freeform with drums, percussion and bass joining the electronics and trumpets. A single live take spans the entire first side of the vinyl, building, as improvisation often does, in intensity as it progresses. There is a consistent aesthetic across the track's quarter of an hour, though each musician moves through musical ideas so that things constantly shift and hold interest. It's an interesting half-way point between abstract sound and musical deliberateness. side 2 is a very interesting blend of remix and cover version and, while very obviously based on the same piece of music, sheds completely new light and is just as listenable in itself. Mention must also be made of the hand-printed artwork, always a major plus in my opinion. If it is psychedelic-tinged contemporary improv that suits you, then the music and packaging of this work will definitely not disappoint.”
paul dickow rates sonic lozenge for textura magazine as one of his top ten tiny labels!
“A relatively new label in Portland I don’t know well, but they’ve done a couple of super strong local releases with almost no means or distribution. Their Gulls (aka Jesse Johnson, trumpet player for Evolutionary Jass Band) CD and recent 12-inch are totally perfect examples of Portland’s NO GENRES ethos. I expect to hear great music from this label, centered around electronic musician Michael Bruce, and other pals related to the Trade Up gear shop gang.”
strategy has been a long time electronic dance wizard in portland with releases on kranky, audio dregs, and his own super rad community library record label (which, if i was asked, would certainly be one of my top ten tiny labels). if you are unfamiliar with this man’s work, you must acquaint yo self!
